Alter Friedhof Harburg

A beautiful park with old trees, consecrated as a cemetery in 1828, a paradise well hidden behind Harburg's house facades since 1937 - this is how the old Harburg cemetery can be described. Two new entrances are to make its inner world visible again and open it up anew. As a former viewing plateau, the site is located on the Krumholzberg and thus on a separate level above the city. For this reason, topography is an important design element.

The task of mediating between different height levels is taken on by "stave lines" on Bremer Strasse. Flat grey concrete steps restructure the space and turn coincidence into musicality. Historical gravestones and existing trees become notes on the staves, giving a pleasant rhythm to the ascent into another realm.

At Bunatwiete, a staircase made of Corten steel connects the city with the park. Descending the "Jacob's Ladder" offers a view towards the east of the city.
