Umfeld Eichplatz Jena

In the heart of Jena's old town, a new retail and residential quarter is being built surrounding the new Eichplatz. The design of the public spaces plays a central role in the development and integration of the location into Jena's city centre. The competition entry for the central open space of the quarter, the new Eichplatz, as well as the design manual of the city of Jena set the design tone: natural stone paving, clear lines, simple furniture and subtle lighting define the place.

Design of the street space

The new quarter will have a distinct layout. As a pedestrian zone, motorised traffic takes a back seat. Pedestrians shape and enliven the street space. The design integrates the historical and listed buildings (Town Hall, St. Michael's Church) within the public space. The pavement of the sidewalk is consisted of large-format natural stone slabs and a strip of mosaic paving along the facades providing a border and a transition area. The rest of the street space is uniformly paved. The yellowish natural stone material creates a calm and uniform image, a connection to the adjacent streets as well as a reference to the historic townscape.
